Options

Matt or glossy? It’s all down to your personal taste!

There are two finishes available. Both versions offer the same high quality!

Matt photographic paper

Thanks to the matt finish, there is less light reflection when light shines directly onto the surface. This means that matt photographic paper retains its high-quality appearance even in difficult lighting conditions and whatever the viewing angle. What’s more, the paper is less prone to fingerprints.

Glossy photo paper

Glossy photo paper has an extremely smooth surface. This gives your pictures a high-contrast and colour-intensive look. Also, the colours in your shots have the maximum possible brightness.

Cropping

The various formats used by traditional cameras in contrast to digital cameras often create confusion. The latter usually use a digital image format with an aspect ratio of 3:4, while traditional cameras use a 1 inch format with an aspect ratio of 2:3. The formerly well-known 1inch format of approximately 4 x 6'' has been replaced in the digital world by the digital image format of approximately 4 x 5''.

Explanation of the cropping options:

Variable image length / no cropping (default)

Photos that you order via the Photo Service are adapted to the aspect ratio of the image file so that the image is not cropped (to the extent that this is technically possible).

Depending on the aspect ratio of your image file, this will give variable paper size (image length) within certain limits:

  • Prints in 20er format from approx. 8 x 8'' to max. approx. 8 x 12''
  • Posters in 30er format from approx. 12 x 12'' to max. approx. 12 x 18''
  • Posters in 40er format from approx. 16 x 16'' to max. approx. 16 x 24''
  • Posters in 50er format from approx. 20 x 20'' to max. approx. 20 x 30''

Classic 2:3 format
The photos you order via the Photo Service are adjusted automatically to the paper size. If the aspect ratio of your image file is not 2:3, the photo will be automatically enlarged until there are no white edges. This means that a part of the image will be cropped off (scissors icon: Edit image section).

To prevent white edges from occurring during the exposure, the image section is enlarged by up to three percent before exposure (over projection).

The paper sizes are as follows:

  • Prints in 20er format approx. 8 x 12''
  • Posters in 30er format approx. 12 x 18''
  • Posters in 40er format approx. 16 x 24''
  • Posters in 50er format approx. 16 x 30''

Digital 3:4 format
The photos you order via the Photo Service are adjusted automatically to the paper size. If the aspect ratio of your image file is not 3:4, the photo will be automatically enlarged until there are no white edges. This means that a part of the image will be cropped off (scissors icon: Edit image section).

To prevent white edges from occurring during the exposure, the image section is enlarged by up to three percent before exposure (over projection).

The paper sizes are as follows:

  • Prints in 20er format approx. 8 x 11''
  • Posters in 30er format approx. 12 x 16''
  • Posters in 40er format approx. 16 x 21''
  • Posters in 50er format approx. 20 x 26''

There is no cropping option available for panorama posters. These are always supplied in the ratio 1:3. If the aspect ratio of your image file does not match the aspect ratio of the chosen paper, the image section will be automatically set so that there are no white edges. This means that a part of the image will be cropped off.

  • Panorama posters in 20er format = approx. 8 x 24''
  • Panorama posters in 30er format = approx. 12 x 35''
  • Panorama posters in 40er format = approx. 16 x 47''
  • Panorama posters in 50er format = approx. 20 x 59''

Over projection

When preparing your image file, you should bear in mind that up to three percent of the image/image section will be cropped and thus not visible on the print. This can be particularly important, for example, if you add lettering to the edge of the picture.

Conversion inch/cm

The designations 30x45, 40x60, etc. are colloquial designations.
The paper sizes for the aspect ratio 2:3 are as follows (the sizes have been rounded). The differences arise from the conversion from inches to cm:

  • 20x30 = approx. 20.3x30.5 cm = 8x12 inches
  • 30x45 = approx. 30.5x45.7 cm = 12x18 inches
  • 40x60 = approx. 40.6x90.9 cm = 16x24 inches
  • 50x75 = approx. 50.8x76.2 cm = 20x30 inches

In the photographic industry, the inch dimensions (originating from the USA) are standard. This results in the paper widths 30.5 cm, 50.8 cm, etc. In German-speaking countries, these are referred to as 9 cm, 10 cm, etc. for the sake of simplicity.
